Ronald Mangravite, M.F.A.

Assistant Professor, Motion Pictures

Ron Mangravite teaches courses in screenwriting and producing. He received the University of Miami’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004. He holds degrees from UCLA (MFA, film program) and the University of California, Berkeley.

He recently produced, co-wrote and edited the feature film ALL FOR LIBERTY (www.allforliberty.com) which recently won multiple awards at the 2008 Accolade Competition (www.theaccolade.net) and will premiere at the 2009 Beijing International Film Festival. Award winning short films include “My Father’s Hopes” (writer/producer/director), Silver Palmetto Award - Piccolo Spoleto Short Film Festival, Best of the Fest - Silver Images Film Festival, and “The Queen of the Sea” (writer/director), Best Film, Best Screenplay - Miami Film Festival/Collaboration Film Contest. He was a writer/producer/host for the weekly television series Art Street on PBS affiliate WLRN, co-authored The Complete Screenwriter’s Manual (Allyn & Bacon, 2006) and was the influential film/theatre critic for the New Times newspapers from 2002-2005 (First Prize, Criticism, Florida Press Association).

Prior to coming to UM, he taught at the American Film Institute, the Juilliard School, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley and worked in Hollywood as a script doctor (independent features), story analyst (NBC, Disney, CBS, HBO) and screenwriter. He has written eight stage plays, all produced professionally and directed or produced over forty professional stage productions in New York and in regional theatres nationwide. Professor Mangravite is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Independent Feature Project, SAG, AEA, the University Film & Video Association and the National Association of Latin Independent Producers. Current creative projects include a feature film to be shot in Miami and a Spanish language children’s television project in Colombia.
