Sallie Hughes holds her Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from Tulane University, with a specialization in the politics and media of the region. She is especially interested in understanding the relationship between journalism, citizenship and the public sphere. She teaches courses on international mass communication, foreign reporting, and media and politics in the United States. She participates in both the print journalism program in English and the Spanish-language master’s in journalism program. Prior to receiving her Ph.D. in 2001, her reporting appeared in The Miami Herald, The Washington Post, MacLean's magazine of Canada, El Financiero of Mexico and The Texas Observer.
Dr. Hughes has presented research at conferences of the International Communication Association, the Latin American Studies Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Inter-American Development Bank. She has published academically in the Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics, Latin American Research Review, Political Communication and Critical Studies in Media Communication. She was a consultant on Latin America for Freedom House' annual study Freedom of the Press in the World in 2006. Her book on the transformation of the Mexican media – Newsrooms in Conflict: Journalism and the Democratization of Mexico -- in 2006 is part of the Latin America Series of the University of Pittsburgh Press.
