Lecturer, Electronic Media, Broadcast Journalism, and Media Management

Barton joined the faculty in January 2001. He teaches Advanced Broadcast Journalism and serves as faculty advisor to the student-produced newscast, "NewsVision". Over the past five years, "NewsVision" has won an Emmy award and been named the best college newscast in the country by both the National Broadcasting Society and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Barton spent the first eight years of his career as a television news photographer, reporter and anchor, working in Shreveport, LA, Orlando, FL, and Dallas, TX. He covered the early Space Shuttle developments at the Kennedy Space Center and traveled with candidates Ronald Reagan and George Bush during the 1980 presidential campaign.

Barton then moved into television news management. He served as assistant news director at WPLG-TV in Miami for three years and spent twelve years as a television news director in Norfolk, VA, Greensboro, NC, Louisville, KY, New Orleans, LA, and Harrisburg, PA.

He then spent three years teaching broadcast journalism at Ohio State University in Columbus while also hosting and producing a public affairs interview show at the PBS television station.

Barton grew up in Europe, attending school in Italy, France and Spain. He continues to travel extensively and has visited 44 countries. He is an avid skier and photographer.

Barton received an M.A. in Journalism from The Ohio State University and a B.A. in English Literature from McGill University in Montreal. He spent the summer of 2003 working at WFTV in Orlando on an Educator in the Newsroom fellowship.
