17th Annual Canes Film Festival Will Highlight Student Work In Motion Pictures

The best student work in the Motion Pictures program will be in the spotlight May 2-4 at 17th Annual Canes Film Festival at the Cosford Cinema. The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. on April 28 with a screening of McConkey, a documentary presented by RedBull, followed by a Q&A with director David Zieff after the film. Almost 100 student films and scripts will compete from May 2 to 4 for festival awards granted by influential judges in the entertainment industry. The Department of Journalism and Media Management will host the 65th Annual Student Showcase from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday April 28 to honor outstanding contributions in student media. Students from UMTV, The Miami Hurricane, Distraction Magazine and the Ibis Yearbook will be recognized for their achievements throughout the year. The student team from the School of Communication won the National Student Advertising Competition District Four Championship on April 5 in Orlando and will move on to the semi-final round later this month. The UM Debate Team completed an outstanding and successful competitive year competing in Policy Debate ranked among the top university debate teams in the country by all three policy debate organizations. Rankings are determined by points accumulated through tournament performances throughout the year. Each organization uses a different formula in determining their sweepstakes award winners.
