For many filmmakers, screening their film in Los Angeles is an opportunity that rarely comes. For motion picture students from University of Miami’s School of Communication, that dream is about to be realized.

On June 4 at 8 p.m., the 10th annual Canes Film Showcase presents to a theater of leading industry professionals the top five student films and best screenplay, as judged in May during UM School of Communication’s Canes Film Festival. Screening are Espionage 101, Home, El Mar y El, The Mermaid, and I Want to Beat up Clark Peters. The featured screenplay is Kenneth Langer’s Villify. The works touch on subjects ranging from immigration to mental health, and are characteristic of the life experiences and cultural diversity of the student filmmakers.

“This exposure is priceless for our students, giving them the opportunity to meet film and television industry professionals and gain valuable contacts. Many of our student winners land internships or jobs at the showcase, plus they meet recent graduates and loyal alumni which helps them form an instant network in their chosen field,” says Christina Lane, Department Chair for Cinema and Interactive Media.

The event takes place at the Directors Guild of America Theater One, 7920 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90046 at 8 p.m.
