Ph. D. in Communication
The School of Communication's Master of Fine Arts in Production
prepares students with the necessary skills for success in the moving image profession.
The M.F.A. in Production includes critical studies, professional development, and
production techniques and skills. The production specialization allows students
to concentrate in narrative film, documentary, animation, or experimental filmmaking
using 16mm motion picture and digital formats.
Coursework includes aspects of contemporary cinema, American movie genres, women
and popular culture, film and society, nonfiction film, the structure of dramatic
art, and analysis of the screenplay. Also, professional development and production
courses offer topics on legal aspects of motion pictures, motion picture marketing
and distribution, scriptwriting, and motion graphics and composition, among others.
Special facilities for the Motion Picture program include the campus movie theater,
the Bill Cosford Cinema, film and video sound stages, state of the art editing and
digital post-production suites and one of the nation's largest privately held collections
of 35mm and 70mm films, The Raymond J. Regis Moving Image Archives.
