Ph. D. in Communication
The Master's Program in Film Studies at the School of Communication
offers advanced training in film aesthetics and analysis, as well as thorough knowledge
of the historical, critical, and theoretical aspects of motion pictures. The faculty
members are committed to supporting individualized study. The Film Studies Program
is situated in a diverse urban center, with a vibrant contemporary arts community
and a rich architectural history, enabling students to extend their moving image
study to areas of art, architecture, multimedia, and design.
Coursework covers major film directors, international cinema, film theory and methodology,
women and film, nonfiction film, cultural criticism of popular film, the structure
of dramatic art, among other special topics courses and directed research.
Special facilities for the Motion Picture program include the campus movie theater,
the Bill Cosford Cinema, film and video sound stages, state of the art editing and
digital post-production suites and one of the nation's largest privately held collections
of 35mm and 70mm films, The Raymond J. Regis Moving Image Archives.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Students enrolled in the M.A. Film Studies program must complete a thesis and a
minimum of 30 credit hours at the graduate level.
